Sea Swept Statement
Sea Swept
Shot over the course of several years, the images in my “Sea Swept” series investigate the external world’s power to mirror the internal world. Each piece suggests a manifestation of my own emotional landscape. The ocean and sky are metaphors for my evolving and complicated identity as it is shaped by my reflections and my experiences with others.
In this series, I capture how the ocean pulls feelings from us, reflecting who we are in ways that are sometimes innocent, mysterious, illuminating, idyllic, or terrifying. The manner in which light and shadows refract across the ocean’s surface reminds me of how we all reveal or obfuscate who we are. The sudden shifts of the ocean’s movement parallel our own stormy temperaments. We look at the ocean, and we recognize something deep within ourselves, even though what we see is often mystifying.
The series portrays several different oceans—the Atlantic, Pacific, Caribbean—and each image represents movement and flux. The desaturated scapes layered in shades of blue are portraits of contrast and power, with light bursting through the intense darkness of storm and sea.
